The Problem

The fitness app market is broken. Essential features locked behind paywalls from day one. Bloated UX that overwhelms instead of guides.

Target users (Gen Z + Millennials, 18-35) face unique challenges: no structure, low motivation, short attention spans, and cultural blindspots in meal planning. They need a coach, not another content dump.

Competitive analysis revealed a gap: apps either gate basic features (MyFitnessPal, Noom) or overwhelm with complexity (Strong, Heavy).
None adapt to injuries, supplement interactions, or cultural food preferences.

Fitness context
Understanding the real context: gyms, home workouts, and everything in between.

Research

Three use cases emerged from user interviews:

- Bulk (muscle gain with injury considerations),
- Cut (weight loss with sustainable nutrition), and
- Maintain (health optimization).

Each requires injury-aware modifications and dietary accommodations—features no competitor handles well.

"I don't need another app that tells me what to do. I need one that actually tailors to my needs." — User Research Participant

Design Approach

Daily checklist UX, not engagement farming.

The entire app customizes from onboarding: 10-step visual flow capturing goals, injuries, equipment, dietary preferences, and supplements with smart validation and BMI-based feasibility checks.

Card-Based Tasks

Every interaction presented as dismissible cards—clean, consistent, swipeable. Not system dialogs.

Smart Replacement

Don't like an exercise? Replace it once and the app learns—marks it as "never again."

Freemium Done Right

Free tier gets complete workouts. Pro gets AI meal plans and behavioral coaching. No dark patterns.

The Solution

Dark theme optimized for gym environments. Clear feature hierarchy that respects the freemium model.

  • Today Screen: Command center with streak tracking, smart hydration warnings for supplement users, filterable task cards
  • Coach Maximus Screen: PR management, weight progress with goal celebrations, compliance breakdown, AI insights
  • Behavioral Intelligence: Supplement ROI analysis, recovery readiness signals, drop-off risk detection
  • Injury Awareness: Automatic exercise modifications based on declared injuries

Impact

Real results from a user-first approach to fitness app design.

UX Efficiency
10 vs 23+

Simplified Onboarding

Reduced steps by 57% compared to competitor average while capturing more personalization data through smart, progressive disclosure.

Innovation
💪

Injury-Aware System

First fitness app to automatically modify exercises based on declared injuries. Tracks 15+ common injuries with smart substitution algorithms.

Business Model
100%

Core Features Free

Complete workout tracking, progress monitoring, and exercise library accessible forever. Pro tier ($9.99/mo) adds AI coaching—not core functionality.

Reflection

Personalization isn't about more features—it's about asking the right questions upfront and adapting everything downstream.

The 8-step onboarding feels long but creates an experience that feels genuinely tailored. Every subsequent interaction references what the user shared.

Strategic lesson: Even if the app doesn't dominate the market, solving core problems for Gen Z/Millennials builds lasting brand recognition for future products. Design for lifetime value, not just downloads.
